Upcoming improvements to Digital Twin Victoria

Digital Twin Victoria is being upgraded on Thursday 26 June to improve how maps and spatial data are displayed. This is part of ongoing efforts to provide a smoother, faster and more visually consistent experience within the DTV Platform. DataVic users benefit from these improvements via embedded DTV previews of spatial datasets.

Benefits for users

  • Faster and more consistent map loading and interaction - though actual speed depends on your hardware and internet connection.
  • Smoother navigation (zooming, panning, rotating).
  • Clearer display of map layers, especially in areas with complex data or 3D models.
  • A consistent and refreshed look and feel across all maps and spatial visualizations.

What's changing?

Switch from Carto to Protomaps basemap

  • We replaced Carto with Open Street Map (OSM) via Protomaps for the background basemap layer. Users will have now four additional basemap options available in the DTV Platform to choose from.
  • This change offers better control and consistency in displaying spatial data.
  • It will also enable smoother map interactions depending on your device and connection.

Tile rendering upgrade – improved map image delivery

  • We have improved our map tiles, so the maps have a better load and response. Tiling allows maps to load faster and use less data by only displaying the areas you need to see.
  • The update aims to improve map detail for a better visual experience.

Enhanced support for complex and 3D visual layers

  • Map delivery has been improved with a new tiling system, enabling faster load times, smoother navigation, and better 3D support. This means the map loads in smaller “tiles” instead of large data sets at once, allowing for faster and more efficient rendering.
  • Navigation such as zooming and rotating will feel smoother and more natural.

National Map decommissioning:

As part of a Federal Government update, some datasets in the National category of the Public Catalogue will be removed from access by 30 June 2025, while others will be updated to improve accuracy and compatibility.

We’ve maintained an integration with National Map since DTV’s launch. While this connection continues, the availability of some datasets will change, and some will no longer be accessible.

To support this shift, the Australian Government has launched the Digital Atlas of Australia - a new platform offering enhanced mapping tools, analytics, and access to reliable national datasets.
Please note that other data integrations with other open-data sources, such as DataVic, will not be affected.
