Data meet User Innovation Event

The Victorian Department of Transport (DoT) has issued an innovation challenge called Data Meet User, looking for open data-based solutions to give customers more confidence and choice as they move around in these challenging times.

DoT is looking for partners to help uncover and transform new and existing data and provide solutions to help customers access information across a range of mobility options.

There are two use cases they are focussing on:

  • providing customers with truly multi-modal information within a transport precinct
  • digitising the kerbside to help alleviate last-mile delivery congestion.

But you’ll need to move quickly – registrations on the Buying for Victoria tenders portal close on January 24 (that’s next week!). There will be a briefing session on January 28 and submissions are due by February 11.

This tender is open to all sizes of businesses – from small start-ups to the big end of town. As the saying goes, a good idea doesn’t care who comes up with it…

Up for grabs is the opportunity for seed funding to prototype your solution before successful ideas progress to live pilots.

DoT conducted a similar challenge as a response to the coronavirus pandemic in 2020, with the goal of giving Victorians the confidence to return to the public transport network after the lockdowns.

They set up a series of pilots to test how to quickly deploy technology to restore confidence and increase safety on the public transport system. One of the pilots became RideSpace, a tool to display real-time passenger volumes across the metropolitan train network, allowing people to decide when they are most comfortable travelling.

If you’ve got great ideas about how Victoria can make better use of open data to help meet the challenges the transport network is facing, then register here and search for the Data Meet User tender.
